Artek Replaced Plastic with Paptic® in Stool 60 Packaging – A Step Towards Fully Recyclable Furniture Packaging

Espoo, Finland 20 May 2025 – Artek has taken a significant step in its goal of using naturally-sourced materials throughout its product offering by replacing plastic with Paptic® material in the packaging of the iconic Stool 60. The updated packaging is now fully recyclable in the paperboard stream, making it easy for consumers to recycle responsibly while ensuring the high-quality protection that the wooden product needs during transportation.

Artek’s Holistic Approach to Sustainable Design

Sustainability is about more than just the product—it extends to the entire lifecycle, including packaging. Stool 60 is crafted from responsibly-sourced Finnish birch. Now its packaging follows the same principle – combining cardboard and Paptic®, two fibre-based materials that can be recycled together in the same stream – while eliminating plastics by using Paptic® for the inner packaging.

“The prioritisation of natural materials over synthetic alternatives is, and always has been, central to Artek’s design philosophy. By choosing Paptic®, we reduce plastic usage and provide our customers with a recyclable alternative. They appreciate our commitment to sustainable solutions, enabling them to act more responsibly,” Marianne Goebl, Managing Director of Artek.

A Genuine Opportunity to Improve Packaging Sustainability with Paptic® Without Compromising Functionality

As consumers demand more sustainable alternatives, packaging plays a key role in both the environmental impact of furniture brands and how they communicate their commitment to sustainability. Often, packaging is the first physical touchpoint between a brand and a consumer.

By switching to soft and durable Paptic®, companies can:

• Reduce plastic in packaging—also irregularly shaped and surface-sensitive items can be packed in Paptic®

• Create a pleasant unboxing experience for consumers

• Make recycling effortless with paperboard stream compatibility

• Strengthen sustainability credentials with FSC®-certified material

Paptic® – The Future of Sustainable Flexible Packaging

Paptic® materials were innovated and developed to replace plastics in flexible packaging with renewable and recyclable alternative. As a fibre-based material, Paptic® is available with FSC® certification, ensuring responsible sourcing from sustainably managed forests. Paptic® material offers flexibility, durability, and a soft touch and feel for your flexible packaging needs.

“We are proud to collaborate with Artek – a brand committed to making sustainable choices and driving responsibility. It is a privilege for us to be part of the packaging for Stool 60, such an iconic piece of furniture. This partnership reflects our shared ambition to reduce plastic use and promote more sustainable practices in both design and packaging” completes Esa Torniainen, Chief Strategy Officer and Co-founder of Paptic Ltd.

With brands like Artek leading the way, this project highlights how furniture and packaging can be part of the same sustainable vision. Is your company ready to make the switch?
